What is a territory capture app?

A territory capture app turns your GPS activities (running, cycling, walking) into a game on a real map: the areas you cover become yours. Depending on the app, other players can take them back, or the goal is simply to complete your own map.

The apps, one by one

Nine apps, with what each does best and what may hold you back.

Konquo

Platforms
iOS and Android (store listings being published).
Sports
Running, cycling, hiking, walking: any outdoor GPS activity.
Capture
The world is split into hexagons of about 300 m². Every hexagon you pass through is captured, so is the inside of a closed loop, and other players can take them back. Four classes change the rules: Titan (one extra capture ring), Saboteur (0 to 3 invisible mines planted along its route), Scout (sees zones within 5 km, detects mines within 500 m), Guardian (a 50% chance that a captured hexagon needs 2 passes to be retaken).
Pricing
Free. Optional Konquo+ subscription at 4.99 EUR a month or 39.99 EUR a year (premium maps, 3D mode, replay video, themes).
Strength
The strategic layer of the classes, and clubs with chat and shared territory.
Limitation
A young project with a young community. Activities cannot be imported from Strava (sending to Strava works) and the direct Garmin connection is coming.

INTVL

Platforms
iOS and Android.
Sports
Running (walks count in the running game) and cycling, as two separate games.
Capture
Close a loop and everything inside it becomes your territory. Rivals can take it back.
Pricing
Free. Optional INTVL Pro subscription (full route planner, complete leaderboards, boosted competition entries).
Strength
A large community (over a million downloads on Google Play), real-prize competitions, support for Apple Watch, Garmin, COROS, Polar, Suunto, Fitbit, Hammerhead and Wahoo.
Limitation
No import from Strava.

Motera

Platforms
iOS only, Android announced.
Sports
Running.
Capture
A closed loop around an area captures it; the bigger the loop, the more ground you win. Other runners can take it by running through it. A Fog of War hides the streets you have never run.
Pricing
Free, optional Pro subscription.
Strength
Full run tracking and a real social network (groups, chats, comments, posts).
Limitation
No Android yet, and no direct GPS watch or bike computer connection described (sync goes through Apple Health).

Run An Empire

Platforms
iOS and Android.
Sports
Running and walking; the App Store listing also mentions cycling.
Capture
You capture the places you move through to build an empire, battle neighbours for castles and lead your people from the stone age to the space age.
Pricing
Free, with ads (Google Play) and monthly or yearly subscriptions.
Strength
A pioneer of the genre, with a civilisation-building layer and a Strava connection so you can leave your phone at home.
Limitation
The latest iOS version dates from July 2023 according to the App Store.

Turf

Platforms
iOS and Android.
Sports
Walking, running, cycling.
Capture
Over 150,000 fixed zones are placed around the world. Go to a zone, stay there for a minute, and it is yours. A new round starts every month and everyone starts from zero.
Pricing
Free, ad-free, optional Supporter subscription.
Strength
A long-running game (on the App Store since 2013), with real-world player events.
Limitation
You capture predefined zones, not your route, and the one-minute stop per zone does not sit well with a continuous training session.

CityStrides

Platforms
Website, fed by your connected services (Garmin, COROS, Polar, Suunto, Strava, Runkeeper, MapMyFitness).
Sports
Running and walking.
Capture
The goal is to cover every street in your city; your progress shows on a map and compares with other people in your city.
Pricing
Free. Supporter plan at 5 USD a month or 50 USD a year.
Strength
Accepts many sources, including Strava, and covers cities in over 190 countries.
Limitation
No territory battle: nobody takes your streets. A one-person project, according to its pricing page.

Squadrats

Platforms
iOS, Android and web.
Sports
Cycling, running, walking, swimming, boating: anything powered by muscles, wind or gravity (e-bikes allowed).
Capture
The map is divided into squares of about one mile (squadrats) and squares 64 times smaller (squadratinhos). A square is yours as soon as you enter it; the goal is to connect them into a large area.
Pricing
Free sign-up.
Strength
Multi-sport in the broadest sense, with import from Strava or Garmin on top of its own app.
Limitation
A personal collection with no rule for taking squares from others: it is not a head-to-head game.

HexaRun

Platforms
iOS and Android.
Sports
Running, trail running and walking.
Capture
Your kilometres, imported from Strava, raise your region's score in a national ranking across French regions. On top of that come a talent tree, quests based on French heritage and community raids.
Pricing
Free, optional VIP subscription. The Android version contains ads.
Strength
Premium expeditions with a physical reward shipped to your home, a loop generator with GPX export, an SOS mode.
Limitation
The game is played between French regions, and points depend on Strava sync.

KYRO

Platforms
iOS and Android.
Sports
Running.
Capture
Run a loop (start and finish within 50 m, course at least 20 m wide) and the enclosed area becomes your territory, which others can take.
Pricing
Free, some features paid.
Strength
Club play, 13 progression tiers from Iron to Legend, landmark courses with lap counting; Apple Watch, Garmin and Suunto connections.
Limitation
Running only.
